Abaco Islands in the Bahamas

Where are the Abaco Islands?

Map of Abaco Bahamas
Once you find your way to the Abacos, you might not want to go home!

You’ll find the lovely Abaco Islands in the northern Bahamas, just 180 miles off the south Florida coast. The Abacos are called the “top” of The Bahamas because it is the northernmost point of the country. This 120-mile chain of islands includes the two main islands, Great Abaco and Little Abaco, and additional barrier cays.

Where are the smaller barrier cays?

Take in the natural beauty below the surface in the Abaco Islands.

Walker’s Cay and Grand Cay lie to the north. Spanish Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Man-O-War Cay, Elbow Cay, and Scotland Cay, which is private, lie to the south. Tilloo Cay and Lubbers Quarters lie southernmost. To the west of the Abacos is Castaway Cay, formerly called Gorda Cay. This is now a Disney Island and Disney cruise ship stop. Moore’s Island is located nearby. And don’t forget Manjack Cay, an uninhabited island that offers exquisite day trips and pristine beaches. A quick glance at a map will show the close proximity of the islands and cays, many of which offer ferry service.

What are some things to do on the Abaco Islands?

Swim with the pigs in the Bahamas
Swim with the pigs? Yes, please!

There are so many things to do in the Abacos. Where to begin? First, you should learn about some of the most popular destinations. For instance, Marsh Harbour, which is located on the Big Island of Abaco, is the hub of activity for the Abacos and The Bahamas’s third largest city. Treasure Cay is a popular resort area there known for its lovely destination weddings. Hope Town is another popular spot, located on Elbow Cay. Visitors also enjoy Coopers Town and Fox Town in the north and Sandy Point and Cherokee in the south.

Now, think about what you’d like to do in the Abacos. Explore a blue hole? Go for a boat ride? Try out some snorkeling or diving? (Caverns and reefs and shipwrecks – oh, my!) Try your hand at sailing? Shop ‘til you drop? Do some biking? Fishing? (The Abacos have some of the best bonefishing anywhere! Also, blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, kingfish, dolphinfish, amberjack, grouper, and wahoo!) Check out the night life at a club? Just chill? Explore the third largest barrier reef in the world? Swim with the turtles and pigs? (Wait… what? Yes, swimming with the pigs is a thing in the Abacos! Share your photos!) You can do all this and more. Or less. Whether it’s fast-paced water sports you want or rest and relaxation, the beach resorts of the Abacos cater to every interest.
